Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/02/2005

Number: 1

Tagged my first monarch this evening at 6:30. I'd chased him at noon yesterday, saw his shadow fly across the window I was sitting beside this afternoon, then ran out with the net and sat first in the front yard in the shade of the palm trees where I spotted him again, but couldn't get close as he zipped over the banana trees and vanished. I kept sitting and scanning the sky. Zip! He suddenly let go of the hackberry on the east and sailed off over the house, so then I sat in the back yard under the pecan tree for half an hour and finally here he came to puddle in the mud created by the water leaking over the edge of the big bird bath. I was ready!

One slightly faded, large male. Seems to have a fairly skinny abdomen. But many nectar sources are available.

No migration here yet, of course, but spotted 2 other monarchs at the MLMP monitoring site on the Cunningham Ranch before noon Friday.
