Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/30/2005

Number: 200

On Wednesday (9/28/05), after noticing monarchs in our area, about 90 fourth graders at Santa Rita Elem. searched the Journey North website as they learned about the monarch migration. In all, 12 children reported that hundreds of monarchs had roosted in their trees the night before (9/27/05) and were gone the next morning. This was prior to the cold front that passed through Wednesday night with high winds and cooler temperatures. Now all these young 4th grade scientists are on the watch for our annual visitors.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum of 200 monarchs based on observer’s comment that 12 students saw trees with “hundreds.”
