Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2005

Number: 1

While biking the national park along the seashore at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, we counted 32 monarchs all traveling from the ocean side of the park to the bayside (west to east) between 10:00am and 11:00am. The weather was a perfect 75 degrees with slight winds and sunshine. Between 9/19/05 and 9/30/05, on my way home from school, I travel a highway along the ocean and record between 10-22 monarchs daily. They were each flying from the ocean to the bayside (east to west) at approximately 4pm. In the mornings, aorund 7:30am (which I thought would have been too early for monarchs to get up!), I have noticed several flying from the bayside toward the ocean!
