For the past few weeks we have sighted monarchs daily - this is about the only time of year we see monarchs in our area. Few, if any are sighted until the end of August, and on the milkweed planted in a butterfly garden, larvae are only present during September. Unfortunately, few of those larvae end up becomming butterflies because deer and other animals and birds eat them, despite the taste! My classroom brought most of the larvae inside and we fed, nurtured and released 12 monarchs. Students are reporting seeing 1 - 2 monarchs daily, all in flight.
