Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/08/2005

Number: 1

Beautiful, spectacular fall day. Hundreds of monarchs descending today on our 171 acre true remnant of post oak/ little bluestem savannaht here on the University of Dallas campus, 1845 E Northgate Dr. Irving, Texas, near Texas Stadium, not far from DFW. We have many stands of pure natives now in full bloom for nectar: much, much liatris, goldenrod (of course) also, climbing hemp vine (mikania scandens.). This year's been bone dry & not much else now except broomweed and bitterweed. (We've a lot of milkweed here too, esp. bluevine and matelea biflora) I've been watching the migration closely for 5 years now, since I've worked on this campus.
A large roosting area on the north end of campus has been in use at least 5 years now--in a stand of mature post oaks, very next a large 10 acre expanse of mowed lawn of Holy Trinity Seminary. Many thanks--Karen Gempel kgempel@udallas.edu
