Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/08/2005

Number: 1

Started seeing butterflies (Monarchs) at dusk. They were landing high in second growth Pines on Beards Bluff above Beards Lake in Hempstead County, AR. There were hundreds of them. Most lit adjacent to others but some clung to each other in huge groupings. The next day (Sunday 10 09 05) they flew just as the sun touched them. They left one at a time and in explosions of dozens of individuals against the brilliant blue of the morning sky. It was a gitf to share the morning and evening with them.
