Monarchs began moving through in good numbers late Friday in conjunction with a cold front that blew through. The Dallas County Lepidopterists'
Society went ahead with its scheduled field trip on Saturday, October 8th, despite the cool temps and cloudy conditions, mainly because I knew that even though we wouldn't see many other species on the wing the monarchs would definitely make a show. They did not disappoint. All day Saturday and Sunday monarchs streamed through the area. I counted over 250 in my own yard at any given time feeding on Gregg's Mistflower and Tropical milkweed. By early Sunday evening and all day today the wind has turned from north to a strong breeze out of the south, which has definitely slowed the progression a bit. Another cold front is expected this week which will no doubt push things along again.
