On October 7-8, I was bowhunting about 12 miles east of Menard on a property that backs up to the San Saba river. We walked down to the river after an unsuccessful hunt. There were thousands upon thousands of Monarchs on the trees lining the river. By noon on Saturday, all of the Monarchs were gone, just the occasional butterfly flying through.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 5000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “thousands upon thousands.”
