Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/12/2005

Number: 6

I started looking up at clouds to focus my binoculars for observing high flying birds, like the chimney swifts, whe I saw
MONARCHS! I couldn't see most of them with unaided eye, but they indeed were soaring with their little wings out stretched to Mexico. Lower flying Monarchs were easily identified. We easily saw about 20-25 in a 10 minute period (about 5 PM) Then about 6 PM several (5-6) were seen flying lower through the trees to land, I assume, for the night.
