Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/10/2005

Number: 1

I spent Monday, 10 October, on our property out in Val Verde County.
There we enjoyed the company of millions of monarchs that were in the
trees along the Devils River.
For a distance of at least a mile and a
half, north from the junction of the river with the Dry Devils River,
in the gallery forest along the west side of the river, there were
more monarchs than I can image ever assembled together north of the
wintering forests in central Mexico. They were mostly resting on
trees, and looked as numerous as the leaves in the trees, with many
just quietly flitting all through the woods. They were there when we
arrived at 8 am and still there when we left at 2 pm. It was very
magical. I have no idea if this is some regular stop or congregating
point in their migration-perhaps this is an annual event?-but there's
really no one there to ask. I can't begin to estimate the numbers of
monarchs that were present.
It was a very spectacular event in a very quiet sort of way.
