This past week October 10 -13 my children and I began looking and were amazed by the number of Monarchs we saw going through Plano, TX. Well over 20 or 30 during any given 20-30 minute walk.
On Wednesday, October 12th around 3:30p.m. we were driving south into Carrollton, TX from Plano (20 minute drive) and decide to count the Monarchs to see where there were more. We noticed there was a significant drop between Plano and the Carrollton area we were in. In Plano there were at least 10-20 visible during any portion of the drive.
As we enter the Dallas Tollway that number decreased (my kids couldn't see any as I was trying to drive with the flow of traffic -- 60mph).
When we exited the Tollway at the Carrollton/Plano border, we could only see a few (less than 5-10) and at one stoplight, we noticed many birds so that could explain the decrease of our sightings.
Anyway, this was a great nature lesson in the migration of the Monarch Butterflies.
