On the 12th of October we motored southward from the San Antonio, Texas area, crossed the border at Columbia, Nuevo Leon and camped the first night in Bustamante Canyon near the desert town of Bustamante. We arrived late and therefore were not able to see whether or not monarchs were present. The following morning we were delighted by groups of up to 20 roosting mainly in, but not restricted to, Huisache trees along the water course. The canyon is maybe three miles long and choked with riparian forest - at least along the stream.
We estimated about 5000 total in the canon, but this was a guess and not arrived at very systematically. The night of our arrival, it had rained lightly; the day itself was cloudy with winds coming up the canyon. The monarchs were not moving and did not resume their migration that morning as is usually the case.
