Single loon observed in open Atlantic ocean about 1/4 mile from shore at about 4 pm EST . Air temperature was in the 50"s. Clear sunny day. The bird was diving underwater and appeared to be drinking (as I saw it swallowing water), but this water might have contained food from its dive. I was about 20 feet away in a small sailboat (no motor). It gave a short "wail" before diving down, but it came up again quickly. Its general direction of swimming appeared to be toward a harbor.
