We are in a rural area that is home to many cherry farmers. The land is hilly and when it's not an orchard, it is covered in hardwood forests. Lakes are everywhere and make it impossible to drive in any direction in a straight line for more than a few miles without having to go around one. The largest lake near us is of course Lake Michigan, and Elk Rapids is wedged between the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay and a large inland lake, Elk Lake. There are numerous resorts here and vacation homes, as people enjoy the climate for outdoor activities. We have 4 seasons and go from a few 100 degree days in the summer to a few -10 degree days in the winter. We have plenty of lake effect precipitation so it's not at all a dry place. Most people spend their time in either the water or the snow depending on the season.
