Signs of Fall

Date: 11/17/2005

Number: 1

As surely as the first snowstorm happens, they bless me! For the last 12 years, I've just happened to be outdoors around 11 am on the first real snowday. The wind brings a sound like children's voices on a faraway playground. Perhaps the first part of a wild goose's cry best describes it - a wild heart catching song that rings with magic excitement. Two glistening V's sweep past, too high this year to hear the delightful tinkling sound the air makes tumbling behind their wings. They look lemony warm skimming across patches of arctic blue and white. Once endangered, trumpeter swans seem to be gaining, this flock numbers around 75. Their flight path is due east instead of southward. Their calls tingle lingering as they turn to fine white scratches on the icy blue sky. Like me they put off getting ready for winter until it drifts in from the sky in icy feathers!
