We saw our first Mother and Calf on Sunday, Jan 1. Haven’t seen any since. Also, no northbound whales yet.
NOTE: We assume this is a SOUTHbound mother/calf pair. We always are worried to hear about a calf born too early and having to finish the journey south in cold water with no blubber. In this case, the calf will have to swim xx miles south from California to Mexico. This shows why the warm lagoons are such good nurseries for gray whales. By the time they start the journey north, they have been fattend up and strengthened for the long swim to Alaskan waters.
