On Saturday, I saw no fewer than 6 monarchs at Ft. Macon in Carteret County. Can anyone offer up an explanation for their existence in winter? I know that monarchs are seen through January (and February?) annually. Are these butterflies coming from small roosts of individuals that, for whatever reason, decided to stop short on their fall migration; are they blown in behind mid-winter warm fronts; are they super-early migrants tricked by Indian summer?
