Robin (First HEARD singing)

Date: 01/15/2006

Number: 1

We have had the mildest winter since 1880. The temperature has topped 60 degrees several times. A large number of robins have wintered here, eating berries from shrubs and trees. On a bright sunny morning in mid-January, I heard a robin in my neighborhood singing clearly for several minutes in a maple tree.

I am very familiar with the songs and calls of birds. It was a full song, but probably not a permanent territory at this point. The robins we have in winter are probably not same ones we have in summer, but they do winter here and day length and spring-like conditions do inspire them to sing. Owls are nesting now and local residents are singing lot in the morning:
cardinals, Carolina chickadees, tufted titmice, etc.
