Robin (First SEEN)

Date: 01/30/2006

Number: 1

I had 3 robins at 405 Clark Street in Bassett NE (Rock County) eating small dried crab apples off my Prairiefire crab tree and the anora cherrys off that bush.
American robins are seen all winter in the Niobrara River valley and the Long Pine Creek drainage in northern Nebraska.
The first week of January I saw approximately 500 robins in the cedar trees around the Gordon Valley Ranch headquarters which is located on Gordon Creek 23 miles SW of Valentine NE in Cherry county. The cedar tree problem inthe sandhills of Nebraska is partly due to the spread of cedar berry seeds by the robins and bluebirds. The source of these seeds are the extensive plantings of western red cedars in windbreaks around the ranch headquarters and the native cedar trees in the breaks of the creeks and Niobrara river. The lack of fire to control the small cedars has become an enormous problem in the ranching areas of the entire state of Nebraska.
