Robin (First HEARD singing)

Date: 01/30/2006

Number: 1

in an area where i've seen robins several times in the last few weeks, i heard singing several days ago. there were probably about 10 birds in the group (that i heard). although this "winter" has been unbelievably mild already, this particular day was sunny and very springlike. a friend in guelph mentioned he also heard robins singing within the last week (possibly the same day)

February 8
Despite the early time of year, I am quite positive that I've heard robins singing. In fact, since submitting my observation, I have heard them singing twice again in the same area, as well as seen them and heard them calling.

I don't think it's really a territorial song, though. The robins are still congregating in groups, with one to a few of them singing at a time. Often, it is more of a chatter than singing, but I have heard the actual song (though sometimes
truncated) clearly
once or twice. This location is quite close to my home, so I've been there several times.
But I've also seen and heard (calling) robins in two other places several kilometers apart, also on a regular basis. I'm not sure how this should be entered for the study; the robins have been singing, but they are not yet setting up territories.
