Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/30/2006

Number: 1

what a mass!!! About 175 birds (each day) flew in 2 days in a row....Jan. 30 and 31 around the same time....between noon and 2 pm. (I actually heard and saw small flocks (30 or so) about 2 weeks earlier....sporadic sightings....those days were also clear and in the 40's.)
They hit our American Holly trees and lifted all the berries. It was like the Hitchcock movie. They were oblivious to me and my pup sitting out there watching them.
The weather was clear, sunny, about 40 degrees.
It was very unusual to see them so early in my yard....I have noted them annually in winter at the Rutgers Woods about 5 miles away.
Incidentally, along with the mass of Robins, there was a huge number of American Goldfinch fighting for my sunflower hearts....a flock of about 100.
I seem to remember heavy rains came a couple days later....so they flew in on the leading edge of that front.
