This afternoon Mary Ann and I saw a male Rufous Hummingbird feeding in our back yard
in Simi Valley. It was feeding on the red flowers of an island sage. We have often seen
them here in past years - but only in the spring! At first glance I thought it was probably
an Allen's, but it posed for us and was definitely a Rufous. His entire back was orange.
I would like to hear from others how unusual it is (or is not) to see Rufous Hummingbirds
here in the winter.
