Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/06/2006

Number: 1

I saw the silhouette of a large butterfly gliding over the house from southwest to northeast...returning from exactly the same direction that we saw monarchs leaving in the fall. I was so surprised and excited. I ran inside to grab my binoculars, but was too late to confirm the butterfly as a monarch. It's behavior and gliding without flapping its wings make me believe I have seen my first monarch of the spring migration. I will be checking the Asclepias oenotheroides at school everyday for the presence of eggs.
