Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/05/2006

Number: 1

Three days ago (March 5), my youngest son noticed 2 'very-newly-hatched'
(less than 1/4" long)monarch caterpillars on the only milkweed bush in our butterfly garden that hadn't been pruned back in fall.

On the remaining (pruned) bushes, we've had new leaf growth for about 1.5 -
2 weeks. All of the plants are loaded with clusters of forming buds...some have already opened. We had a very warm/dry December and January, but have been making up for it over the last several weeks, and are expecting another storm tomorrow.

No overwintering monarchs were noted this year, and no sightings of mature monarchs migrating.

Anxiously awaiting spring in Southern California!!
