We sighted a monarch in Tallahassee on Wednesday, March 1. My guess is that it was a "coaster", i.e., an offspring of one of the scores of monarchs that overwinter right along the coast of the Florida panhandle.
No native milkweeds emerging yet, but in Tallahassee (we're about 25 miles from the coast) some in-the-ground A. curassavica have survived our relatively warm winter. In addition, we have 200+ A. curassavica in pots that we've raised in the greenhouse over the winter. We're ready and waiting for the arrival of all those northward bound monarchs; however, we consider ourselves fortunate if one to five of them show up this far east.
