Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/06/2006

Number: 1

I saw a male monarch flying northward along Chimney Creek six miles north of Helotes. It was looking for nectar but there is little in bloom in the area due to the drought. Redbud and wild plum were blooming, but the Monarch didn't approach those plants. There is antelope horns growing on the east facing slopes above the creekbed. It is 2-3 inches long, with three stalks to each rosette. Wild hogs are feeding heavily on the milkweed--another indication of the drought conditions in this area.
