Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/18/2006

Number: 1

I found several newly hatched Monarch caterpillars on Antelope horns near [6 miles northwest of] Helotes. They were eating the eggshells. Six were collected and taken on 3/20/06 to Timberwilde Elementary School [Northside ISD] where they will be reared abd released by my students. Since 9/11 my Gifted and Talented students have been working on a public service project to release a butterfly for each individual killed in the terrorist attacks. They have released 1697 butterflies todate. By far the majority have been Monarchs. We have also raised Queens, Giant Swallowtails, Eastern Black Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails and 2 moths.
