Tulips EMERGED

Date: 03/23/2006

Number: 1

We still have one patch of snow on our tulip bed, but where the snow has cleared we could see that our tulips had emerged! Our students quickly became detectives, to determine who or what had run through our garden. We had a few broken sprouts and a large tire track across the tulip bed. We believe someone with a four- wheeler went across the tulip bed to cut down a small tree. We could see a stump with sawdust around it. The garden looked "flooded" where the tire track was at, for there was standing water in the hole it had made. We are going to see if
most of the plants will recover from being run over. One other unusual note we made was that this year's emerging growth is very red. Usually the tips of growth are green. We are wondering if the extra moisture or the lack of sunlight for so long could have affected the color of the plants. Also, several bulbs have more than one sprout. We will watch them grow and change!
