All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/24/2006

Number: 1

The clouds sweep low today, the wind quiets bird songs. It is cold out there amid the drifting rainflakes!
Spring tiptoes today, the bare ground a patchwork of moldering autumn leaves and various stitches of gray and green grasses. Tall, tangles of winter burnt grasses sway all grayed and bleached. Life is opening in the tips of the autumn olives and the raspberry vines are growing redder. Deer tracks and mole volcanoes crosshatch the sleeping thatch. The scent of earth rises from the thawing ground. A single peeper's flute argues with the raw wind's wail. The dark pond ripples free of ice in spite of the cold. Wings whistle as a pair of mallards rise suddenly from the pond willows. Here and there tiny kittens peek from the willow tips. Three robins spar and tussle in high leaps on the ground, while a fourth one scolds from a treetop. KaChing has spent the day chasing a robin from tree to tree feverishly claiming each spot they land on.
