Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/28/2006

Number: 1

One of my entomology students collected a male and a female monarch 4 miles west of Clinton in Hinds Co., Mississippi yesterday afternoon, March 28, 2006. The student, Jeffrey Cooper, saw several others flying at tree top level but some were also nectaring on butterweed, Senecio glabellus.

This afternoon we checked the milkweed at Choctaw Trails in southwest Jackson and found a dozen eggs on the 2-3 inch sprigs of green milkweed, Asclepias viridis. Two adults were also seen in the fields. I had checked the milkweed in this area on Saturday, March 25 but no eggs were found then.
