Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/08/2006

Number: 1

I spent Saturday April 8 driving through the extreme southwest portion of Louisiana--specifically, Cameron Parish, a region devastated by hurricance Rita last Sept. Some wildflowers are blooming along roadsides but I found no evidence of the native antelope horn milkweed, A. viridis, a plant that was found in the region prior to RITA. Perhaps the salt water surge (over 30 feet and lasting over a week) killed the plants or simply retarded their growth. I did, however, observe about 2 dozen adult monarchs flying about. One was nectaring on a lantana and another on a Gaillardia. All butterflies appeared to be worn.
