Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/07/2006

Number: 1

Nothing here yet…and, yes, we are watching. My kindergarteners and I worked in our school garden this morning. No sign of milkweed (common) yet, although I’ve been watching every day. The earliest I’ve ever had was Apr. 2, so I’ve been to look a lot this week! My tropical milkweed that I kept inside all winter is about 12” high and leafed out.

We did see a dead Monarch on Tues., however! Another Kdg. teacher had visited Amarillo, TX over the weekend. She was walking along the street and spotted this dead Monarch on the sidewalk. Of course, she brought it to us. We checked it out and decided that it must have been in Mexico. It was quite faded—the orange very dull and the black was only grey—and the wings were tattered on the following edges. There was a large v-shape missing from one hind wing---we think a bird must have taken a bite. Its abdomen was very skinny also.

The children were fascinated! We shared with the other Kdg classes. Everyone is watc
