At my home in Newport News VA the stalks of Asclepias tuberosa, or butterfly weed, stood about 4 inches tall in the flower bed on the south side of my house on this date. However, there were no stalks visible on the north side of the house. The monarchs usually don't use this particular milkweed as a host plant very often, but it is the first milkweed up.
