Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/14/2006

Number: 1

A monarch was lying in a bike path apparently injured by a bicycle.

This was definitely a monarch. My husband spotted it lying in the bike lane while riding his bike on Riverview Road in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Since it was dead, he was able to pick it up and examine it closely. He wanted to be sure that it was not a Viceroy, and in fact found that it did not have the Viceroy's identifying black band.

Aside from its squished abdomen, it was intact. It did look faded and had a very small piece missing from one hind wing. His theory is that it got blown here by one of the strong storms we have had recently (most of our bad weather comes from the southwest). My son-in-law joked that it may have come north in the grill of someone's car.

Last year we planted three milkweed plants in our yard, and were very happy to add two new monarchs to the population.
