Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/14/2006

Number: 1

The first Monarch I spotted this year was actually at Truman Lake in West, Central Missouri. It is very similar in latitude as our school but about 150 miles west. At the time I saw that Monarch it was much warmer than normal at 90F. It was very windy and mostly sunny.

I have since spotted a Monarch the past two evenings (4/18 & 4/19) at my home near school. It looked like the same Monarch each time. The wings appeared faded but not tattered in any way. I have noticed a milkweed coming up in that area that I call Butterfly weed. I don't recall seeing any Monarch's last year at this time, so It seems like a very good sign.
