Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/23/2006

Number: 1

We found milkweed as well as caterpillars at four locations around Channelview; the variety we found is A. viridis. (We is Derrill (age 8) and myself (Mom).) On one we saw caterpillars the size of this ( i ) without the dot. The largest was approximately ¾ an inch, finding this one was quite interesting. We are cutting milkweed for Derrill’s caterpillars at home however we do not want to disturb a caterpillar already there as mother nature intended so we are inspecting each plant carefully before making a cutting (a grow some more cutting). We came across this one plant that showed evidence of a feeing little one but could find 0 caterpillars. A few hours later we chose this sight from which to make our evening cutting. Once again it was noted that this plant was “taken” and this time a ¾ inch caterpillar was spotted on the ground. We took the liberty of returning the little guy to its plant.
