Date: 04/21/2006

Number: 1

On Friday, April 21, 2006 Martin Bialecki sighted a new State of Michigan Lepidoptera Survey early date record for the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). As he describes the sighting: "I saw everything except that black line across the hind wing. I was standing on the edge of the yard looking towards the lake. It came up behind me on my right side, flying very straight, not gliding at all, and staying about 4 ft off the ground / lake surface.” The Degree Day value for April 21 was approximately DD50= 134.
