Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/30/2006

Number: 1

On a farm where we were birding, saw Milkweed up about a foot growing along the edge of an irrigation ditch. Since the Monarch butterfly I saw about two hours later on the same farm and reported here under "Monarch, Other" didn't take (yet!), I'll also mention here that I saw a rather largish, VERY worn Monarch flying like the wind across a grassy field (but NOT near the Milkweed I'd spotted). This particular Monarch was SO large that at first I thought it was a Tiger Swallowtail! (This was also partly-due to it's loss of orange wing-scales, which gave it a far more-yellowish appearance. Am wondering if this one orginally migrated from Mexico?)
