All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 05/03/2006

Two visits to the grove yesterday. In the morning, the two owlets sat side by side snuggling one facing east & the other west. I worry that crows will find them sitting so exposed on the bare catalpas. At sunset, I found only one owlet in a different tree near the nest with the male parent sitting near it. The male has very red coloring & flies quickly to a more protected spot to watch me. There was no sign of the other owlet or the female owl. I suspect the parents have been letting them get hungry to help them learn to hunt. Beneath the nest - many, many pellets of fur & bone shards remind how much food it takes to grow a Horned Owl!
