Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/12/2006

Number: 1

On 5/12/06 I stopped at a stand of common milkweed by the road and found two monarch caterpillars, of different sizes. They were all I found on about 100 plants. I returned today, 5/14, with my digital camera, and again found only two, which may or may not have veen the same ones. Some of these syriaca are forming flower buds already, which seems awfully early. These syriaca are only a couple of miles from my home and are 19-24 inches hig, while my tallest are about 6" and most are just now breaking through the ground.
