Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/04/2006

Number: 1

Went to a nursery to get more milkweed, while there a very tattered female was laying eggs all over the incarnata and glory flower. I wound up buying more than I had planned and i talked so much about it to others there that by the time I left i am sure they sold out! Five plants and over 30 larva. I brought three plants in and left two out. In a few days I transferred 4 larva into the house plants and planted the last outside. Several have died but many > 20 are thriving. The caterpillars on the outside plant are much smaller, which isn't surprising since we had several days of heavy rain which must have interfered with eating. The ones in the house are eating all the milkweed-will have to make a trip back to that nursery. . Problem is the butterfly house I have inside isn't big enough for all this activity, otherwise i would have brought them all inside.
