Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/23/2006

Number: 1

We've seen monarchs for at least the last 4 days. I polled my class and 20
out of 25 students had been seeing them in their neighborhood. We have
seen the most since Monday 5/22 on our playground. We did see some last
week on 5/18 and 5/19 as well. Our school is actually in Prairie
village Kansas, but you can say KC. Missouri. Actually, the milkweed we can buy are annuals.
They do sell perennials that are native to Kansas but the butterflies don't like it.
The milkweed we buy from the KU website that is a perennial seems to be
the kind they like. In the 10 years I've been doing this, I've never
seen the return. I have a feeling with the above average temps we have
that they are early and that we are normally out of school. Either that
or I have an extremely observant class. I have seen them as well.
