Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/25/2006

Number: 1

My son, Joseph, and daughter, Ellie, spotted their first monarchs of the season today. Joseph was able to net them both, one male and one female. Both were in good condition, except for a small notch missing from one of the male's hind wings. Weather this week has turned hot and humid here in southern MN with strong south winds and more temps into the 80's predicted for this weekend. We expect to see more monarchs soon. One note of interest...the male and female were caged last evening around 7 pm and by 8:30 had successfully mated without any encouragement or handpairing attempts. They were apart this morning when Joseph checked them at 8 am, but he said he could feel the spermatophore.
