While visiting the Black Swamp Observatory Banding Station at the Ottawa Wildlife Refuge on Lake Erie located on the Beach-Ridge property of the Davis Besse Power Plant, I had the priviledge of seeing a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird on Saturday, May 20th. We were in the company of Elementary Teacher participants in a "Hands-on-Ohio" Grant-provided program sponsored by OEEF, the Ohio Environmental Education Fund. The returning female Ruby-throat was just one highlight of an outstanding field experience where we were able to explore, close-up, the status of a host of beautiful neo-tropical migrators with exceptional Ornithologist and Instructor, Julia Shieldcastle. Many of the birds were on stopover at this ideal "birding" location while in the process of "Journeying North" to nesting areas.
