Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/22/2006

Number: 1

Found 13 eggs on milkweed alongside the road on 5/22. On 5/26, found an additional 15 eggs on milkweed in the back yard. A friend found caterpillars ranging from 1st to 3rd instar on 5/22 on small milkweed plants in the butterfly garden at the Orchard at Altapass in Spruce Pine, NC, about 15 miles from Bakersville. The Orchard's butterfly garden is a certified Monarch Waystation. This seems very early for this abundance of eggs/caterpillars here in the mountains of western North Carolina.
