I found several eggs on well established milkweed, first. While collecting the eggs I found the female laying the eggs and she seemed very tired and was worn. She rested on milkweed and other plants for as much as five minutes before flying a short ways and resting again. There was very little wing movement while resting. Twice she was on a milkweed and left without laying an egg. I was able to get several close photos of her before she flew into a nearby evergreen tree. She was low enough in the branches to get a few more good shots.
I collected the eggs she had just laid and my total egg count is 22. I have never collected eggs or seen a monarch this early before!
As I was driving away I saw another monarch flying high up, but not resting, in a different group of evergreens, 20-25 feet in the air. I don't think this was the same monarch because the colors were brighter, but I wasn't close enough to get a good look or determine the sex.
I will bring the eggs into my school
