Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 05/27/2006

Number: 1

A hummingbird has built her nest, in a ficus tree, on our covered front porch, in front of our double french windows. As of today, the bird is resting on the nest more in the daylight which leads me to believe that she has laid her eggs already. She watches our family come and go all day long (our front door is only 5 feet away from her nest). I would love to know what type of hummingbird she is. I have already pictures of the nest and will take pictures of her with my telephoto lens, if I can, without disturbing her. Any help you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is a follow-up from my first report. After the mommy left her nest this afternoon, without touching the nest, I found one small white jelly bean-like egg. It is so tiny! The mommy came back and saw me. She just hovered and watched. I left quickly. I hope she will come back soon!
