Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/30/2006

Number: 1

Our hummingbirds have finally returned! And tonite I actually held one in my hand! A male had gotten into my son's garage & spent the day there despite the door being open. He kept hitting the window over and over. My son was so upset that he would kill himself! Exhausted & stunned from hitting the window, the wee bird collasped on the floor for a moment just as I got there. I knew without having eaten all day, he wouldn't survive much longer. We got a small fish net over him. Then I slipped my hand under it to gather up the tiny body. His bill, wings & feet were wrapped with spider webs! Gently, marveling at the tiny feet, bill & body; I managed to free him completely of sticky web. I was so afraid I would break his tiny bones! We dipped his beak in sugar water a few times, then lay him on his tummy in the palm of my hand. After a few seconds, the tiny head raised, the eyes flashed & the tiny bill opened to emit a shrill hummingbird squeak. His wings buzzed as he shot straight up
