Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/01/2006

Number: 1

Found what appeared to be a late 2nd Instar Larva near Whitehouse, Ohio feeding on Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). The egg itself was probably deposited around the 26th of May; hatched in three days due to the very warm and sometimes wet weather we have been experiencing; had its 1st molt and has been growing steadily ever since on an abundance of great-looking milkweed. Also located on the milkweed in this field after just a few minutes of looking. Returned to the Lourdes College Campus in the early evening and found two 1st Instar Monarch Larvae on milkweed growing in the Prairie Garden. Although I didn't check the Swamp (incarnata), Butterfly Weed (tuberosa) or Common Milkweed in our nearby Life Lab Garden because it was late in the day, there should be eggs and larvae to be seen when daylight returns tomorrow.
