Friday June 2nd, while checking milkweed plants for eggs, I discovered 2 - 2nd instar caterpillars! One slightly larger than the other.
Obviously, my report of May 30th, first monarch sighting & eggs was inacurate. A monarch was around several days earlier laying eggs.
This proves that monarchs were up here in Haliburton "MORE than a month earlier than last year".
Note: During my search of many of the young milkweed plants lining our road, many of which were no taller than six inches, I could easily have collected 50 - 100 eggs. Some had 2 or 3 eggs per plant!
